PANEL 1
The wake, held inside a bar with a rather grim look to it. Signs for Mexican beer hang on the walls. A number of people walk around with drinks in their hand. These are all the people from the funeral, plus a few more. A few smiles here and there. Many of these characters will appear later in the story, so look at the character sheets for references.
PANEL 2
DESIREE, ANGEL and SILVIA. Angel is twenty-five year old Guatemalan, thick and fairly attractive, with overly styled hair coming down in thick, dark curls. Desiree is a Puerto Rican woman in her mid-forties. Silvia is a walking bundle of nerves, buttoned up to the neck in severe, angular clothing.
DESIREE
Such a shame.
ANGEL
And what a terrible way to go.
PANEL 3
Different angle. Angel looks to Desiree and Desiree rolls her eyes, as if she’s heard just about enough from Silvia.
SILVIA
It’s a tragedy, is what it is. Yet another tragedy for us all to endure.
DESIREE
So true.
PANEL 4
Patricio (PAT), a stout, gregarious Mexican-American man a little older than Roberto, sits at the bar. He has a can of beer in his hand and talks with the BARTENDER. This is clearly not his first drink. The Bartender listens politely, but stays busy with his bar work.
PAT
I don’t know. Seems like somebody’s parents… or grandparents… or parents… they’re dying all the time these days.
PAT (CONT’D)
And do the traditions get passed on? Hell no!
PANEL 5
Different angle.
PAT
Me? Of course I’ll pass them on. Dia de los Muertos…uh… our food…
PAT (CONT’D)
That’s the way of our people, you know?
PANEL 6
Close in on Pat, a little sadder. Bringing the beer up towards him.
PAT
Of course I’ll pass them on.
PAT (CONT’D)
When I settle down. When this bull settles down to pasture.
