The inside of Pat’s. Again, I have reference photos for this, and will say only that it is close and clustered quarters. The space is rectangular, longer than it is wide. The counter is on the right. Produce on the left. Shelves run from the middle of the store to the rear. Pat (described earlier in the “Funeral” chapter) leans out from behind the counter to face us.

Roberto!
PANEL 2
Roberto walks past the counter without stopping. He heads for a wall to the right past the counter lined with refrigerators.
ROBERTO
Hey, Pat. Just have to pick up some eggs.
PAT
Huevos rancheros?
PANEL 3
Roberto leans into the refrigerator to get a dozen eggs.
ROBERTO
How’d you know?
PANEL 4
Roberto at the counter. He pushes the eggs forward.
PAT
Como madre, como hija.
PAT (CONT’D)
I think. What the fuck do I know? Spanish, eh?
PAT (CONT’D)
Just the eggs?

Roberto hands Pat the money.
ROBERTO
Yeah.
