The Ragbox, Chapter 3, Page 3

Ragbox_Ch3_p3

PANEL 1
Out in the hallway which bisects the bedrooms portion of the apartment from the kitchen/living room portion. Roberto’s bedroom is to the right, at the end closest to the wide entrance into the living room. Then down the hall are doors to the bathroom, Ana’s room and their parents’ bedroom. The door to the parents’ bedroom is open. See the floor plan for reference.

The beautiful detail of the architecture should be stressed in this chapter: external and internal, their apartment and the entire neighborhood. High ceilings, detailed moldings, and large bay windows enliven the room, despite the cheap furniture and cracked walls. Ana stands on opposite Roberto’s door. Roberto stands in his doorway. Roberto’s head is turned to look at the open door.

ANA
Just because Papa didn’t like it

ANA (CONT’D)
Anyway, I like to practice my Spanish. It’s fun, and I can follow the telenovelas.

ROBERTO
Sure, but…

PANEL 2
Roberto’s POV. The door to the parents’ bedroom is open.

PANEL 3
Same as PANEL 1. Ana has turned and walks into the living room. Roberto follows, looking ahead, steely-eyed.

ANA
But nothing. And I know you’re not going to turn down huevos rancheros.

PANEL 4
Ana and Roberto enter the living room. The rear area of the living room gives way to an semi-open kitchen, separated by a low wall, which serves as a bar. Two metal stools sit on the living room side of the bar, two more in the kitchen. To the right of the kitchen, against the far wall, is the front door to the apartment. On the wall behind us is Ana’s window.

The living room is furnished simply and neatly. Some of this has already been described in chapter 1. Additionally, we might see (at different angles) a small couch, in front of the couch: a coffee table, and behind the couch: a small round dining room table. Also in the room: a reclining chair, a small bookshelf, a TV, various pictures in old frames on the walls, and whatever else you see fit.

ANA
Con cebollas. Y pimientas.

PANEL 5
Ana continues into the kitchen. In the following panels, Ana will retrieve said ingredients, as well as various bowls and kitchen tools. Roberto stands by the front door, sorting mail from a small table.

ANA
Maybe some cilantro fresco. Y churizo, por supuesto.
